VITAMINS & MINERALS

MULTIVITAMINS
A multivitamin is a preparation intended to supplement a human diet with vitamins, dietary minerals and other nutritional elements. Such preparations are available in the form of tablets, capsules, pastilles, powders, liquids and injectable formulations. Other than injectable formulations, which are only available and administered under medical supervision, multivitamins are recognised by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (the United Nations' highest authority on food standards) as a category of food.
By supplementing the diet with additional vitamins and minerals, multivitamins can be a valuable tool for those with dietary imbalances or different nutritional needs. People with dietary imbalances may include those on restrictive diets and those who can't or won't eat a nutritious diet. Pregnant women and elderly adults have different nutritional needs than other adults, and a multivitamin may be indicated by their physicians.
While multivitamins can be a valuable tool to correct dietary imbalances, it is worth exercising basic caution before taking them, especially if any medical conditions exist. In particular, pregnant women should generally consult their doctors before taking any multivitamins.

MAGNESIUM
It is essential in calcium metabolism, the production of enzymes and proteins while  providing proper utilisation of fats and carbohydrates.
Although Magnesium can increase energy levels, it contains natural tranquillising properties and may aid the symptoms of stress disorders.
Improves heart rate as it dilates the blood vessels and prevents blood clotting and heart attacks.
Magnesium has been scientifically proven to bring relief to a variety of conditions including cramps, Asthma, chronic tiredness and fatigue, kidney stones, diabetes high blood pressure, migraine and tension headaches, premenstrual tension and osteoporosis.

SELENIUM
Selenium is an important antioxidant which works along with nature's other protectors to guard cells and tissues from free radical damage.
Excessive free radicals can attack vital cell structures and cause damage.
Additionally, selenium can protect the heart, primarily by reducing the "stickiness" of the blood and decreasing the risk of clotting, in turn, lowering the risk of heart attack, and stroke. Moreover, selenium increases the ratio of HDL ("good") cholesterol to LDL ("bad") cholesterol, which is critical for a healthy heart. Smokers or those who've already had a heart attack or stroke may gain the greatest cardiovascular benefits from selenium supplements, though everyone can profit from taking selenium in a daily vitamin and mineral supplement.
Selenium may be useful in preventing cataracts and macular degeneration, the leading causes of impaired vision or blindness in older people.  It is also vital for converting thyroid hormone, which is needed for the proper functioning of every cell in the body and is essential for a healthy immune system, assisting the body in defending itself against harmful bacteria and viruses, as well as cancer cells.  When combined with vitamin E, selenium appears to have some anti-inflammatory benefits as well. These two nutrients may improve chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, and eczema.

VITAMIN A
Vitamin A plays a role in a variety of functions throughout the body, such as Vision, Gene transcription, Immune function, Embryonic development and reproduction, Bone metabolism, Haematopoiesis, Skin health, Reducing risk of heart disease, and Antioxidant activity.

This vitamin is an essential nutrient for maintaining eye health: it counteracts night blindness and helps in the treatment of many eye disorders.

Your body also needs this micro-nutrient for the formation and maintenance of skin, hair, teeth and bones.  Also known as "the anti-infective vitamin" because it enhances the body's natural defence system by increasing white blood cells (T-cells) and antibody production.

VITAMIN B
B-Vitamins are important for healthy mental function and performance.
The B vitamins often work together to deliver a number of health benefits to the body. B vitamins have been shown to: support and increase the rate of metabolism, maintain healthy skin and muscle tone, enhance immune and nervous system function, promote cell growth and division - including that of the red blood cells that help prevent anaemia and reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer, one of the most lethal forms of cancer. Together, they also help combat the symptoms and causes of stress, depression and cardiovascular disease.

VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is a good all rounder helping maintain healthy bones, teeth and skin as well as the health of the immune system by strengthening the blood vessels. Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) plays a crucial role in the formation of collagen, which is the primary substance that holds the body together by binding the cells to form tissues.  It also promotes tissue repair and wound healing and aids recovery from the common cold. Clinical research has shown that Vitamin C can aid the prevention of Heart Disease. Rose Hips add the extra benefit of helping to conserve Vitamin C, which our bodies cannot store, therefore a regular intake is necessary. Research has shown that Vitamin C can help to prevent Heart Attacks, helps to prevent the skin from sagging and treatment of the common cold, helps the delay or prevention of Cataracts, helps in the treatment of Anaemia as it helps to absorb iron content, protects against many forms of Cancer and prevents the accumulation of the toxic mineral lead.

VITAMIN D
Technically a hormone, the benefits of vitamin D include promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphorus by your body, which is important to the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Among the other benefits of vitamin D are strengthening your immune system and preventing some types of cancer.
Taking vitamin D supplements increases the health benefits of other nutrients by making them available to your body.

Doctors also believe that vitamin D benefits include:
Prevention of osteoporosis
Protects against colon and prostate cancer
Slows joint damage due to arthritis
May ease chronic back pain
Protects against multiple sclerosis
Relieves psoriasis
Recent studies have concluded that Vitamin D can play a role in age-related diseases.

VITAMIN E
Virtually anyone who is known to have a poor diet will enjoy the benefits of Vitamin E. This includes people who abuse alcohol or other drugs. People who have a chronic wasting illness, or those who are under excess stress for long periods of time will also benefit from Vitamin E. Anyone who is deemed to be at risk of a heart attack and people with cystic fibrosis or celiac disease will also find a friend in Vitamin E.
Vitamin E supplements are available as tablets or capsules, and should be swallowed whole with a full glass of liquid. They should be taken immediately after eating to decrease stomach irritation. Vitamin E is contained in many of today's multivitamin supplements.

Premature infants and children will show signs of vitamin E deficiency through irritability, oedema and haemolytic anaemia. In adults deficiency will manifest itself through lethargy, apathy, inability to concentrate and nerve dysfunction.

Note: you should not take vitamin E if you are taking Coumadin, and you should also consult your doctor before taking this vitamin if you have cystic fibrosis, intestinal problems, liver disease or an over-active thyroid.

ZINC
Zinc can help promote healing in the body, and can be used to fight cold and flu symptoms. Supplementing zinc when you have a cold or the flu can lead to a speedier recovery. This is also known to happen with sore throats and skin injuries. Zinc helps strengthen the immune system which as we know is our body's key defence against infection and disease. Scientists are continuously carrying out research into further benefits of zinc supplements.  Zinc is a key factor in prostate gland function, reproductive organ growth, the treatment of acne and can help to prevent hair loss.

SPECIAL SUPPLEMENTS

ACETYL-L-CARNITINE
Acetyl-L-Carnitine is a natural vitamin-like antioxidant that has been seen to have significant positive effects in the energy production of the body and on the normal functions of the brain.
Acetyl-L-Carnitine  is more specifically responsible for the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria where fatty acids are broken down through oxidation and transformed into energy.  This process makes L-Carnitine effective in fat loss and weight reduction.
Other benefits include the prevention of fat build-up around the heart, therefore aiding angina and atherosclerosis. It is also seen to reduce the symptoms caused by congestive heart failure and reduce and improve conditions after heart attack.
Studies have revealed its effectiveness in treating Alzheimer's, dementia and other mental problems as L-carnitine helps in the formation of acetylcholine in your brain and in regenerating neurons that are damaged by free radicals. This translates into the ability of L-carnitine to regenerate lost brain functions aiding memory and  giving hope not just to Alzheimer and dementia sufferers but to stroke patients as well.
Recent studies on L-Carnitine have also revealed its ability to reduce attention problems and aggressive behaviour in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.
It can potentially help you improve your mental performance as well as in athletic bodily functions which require you to have high energy resource. It can also help slow down the effects of ageing and can prevent the occurrence of cataracts.
With all the proven L-carnitine benefits, topped by the fact that it is 100% natural, it is no wonder that L-Carnitine is one of the most popular and effective therapeutic supplements known today.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID

Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant which fights against the potentially damaging effects of free radicals in your body that are responsible for ageing and chronic illness.
Alpha Lipoic Acid has the ability to regenerate and recycle other antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E and glutathione back to their previously active state to enhance and increase their function.  It has been seen to help sufferers of Peripheral Neuropathy an illness  whose symptoms can include pain, burning, numbness, tingling, weakness, and itching caused through injury, nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy or by other conditions such as diabetes, Lyme disease, alcoholism, shingles, thyroid disease, and kidney failure.
Alpha lipoic acid has also been suggested for aiding cataracts, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and burning mouth syndrome.

CO-ENZYME Q10

Coenzyme Q-10 is a naturally occurring, fat-soluble antioxidant that appears in almost every cell in the body and is known to have antioxidant and energising properties. It aids body cells to release energy from food and as we age our bodies show a decline in levels of this potent antioxidant which can lead to a huge impact on our general health and well-being.  In taking  Co-Enzyme Q10 as a supplement you can therefore help to prevent the onset of decreased eyesight, hearing and memory loss.
Other benefits include

COLLAGEN
Collagen is the most important building block in the entire animal world. It is a simple, natural protein which is widely found in the body. In fact, it is the most common protein in the body (approximately one-third of all protein in the body is collagen) and it makes up roughly 75% of our skin, which is the body’s largest and most visible organ. The skin consists of two layers: The epidermis, which is the top layer and the dermis, which is the second layer. The main component of the epidermis is collagen, and sufficient collagen helps the skin stay supple and wrinkle-free.
Though it is mainly found in skin, it is also widely found in connective tissues, tendons, cartilage, bone and ligaments, and because the body uses collagen to repair itself on a daily basis, it plays an important role in the building and maintenance of these body parts because fibres of Hydrolysed collagen act like scaffolding in the skin, they are woven together like threads in fabric to form a framework in which new cells can grow.
Collagen also helps hair to stay firm and not brittle, assists cuts and wounds in healing rapidly, keeps nails strong, is essential for  healthy brain tissue and a healthy heart and provides numerous other benefits.
Collagen is essential for growth and development of all body tissue and is especially important for healthy cartilage. It not  only protects the cartilage, but also supplies the new material for it to rebuild itself.
Taking Collagen supplements has been shown to help with both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

FOLIC ACID
Folic acid is essential for normal mental function and performance. These vitamins are water soluble and so it is essential to replenish  levels daily for maximum benefit. Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps prevent birth defects of the spinal cord and brain called neural tube defects (NTD) and should be taken when trying to conceive and carried on throughout pregnancy. This supplement may also help in the treatment of depression and anxiety, poor skin tone, brittle nails and may aid short-term memory and verbal fluency. Folic acid can also be beneficial in treating hair loss as it helps to maintain thickness and colour.  A deficiency of folic acid can also increase the risk of the heart disease due to the build up of cholesterol and hypertension.

SLIMMING SUPPLEMENTS

CHITOSAN
Chitosan is a fibre-like substance which is extracted from marine shells, such as those of crabs and shrimps.
Recent studies imply Chitosan helps speed up recovery time in humans. Its chemical composition & structure allows for increased hydrogen bonding. Humans, on average, are approximately 68-75% water chemically speaking; a supplement which promotes hydrogen bonding means faster healing throughout the body.
Chitosan has also been recognized by many trying to lose weight as an effective way to do so as it soaks up fats as it passes through your body and can bind up to an astonishing six to ten times its own weight in fat and oils. This prevents them from being absorbed by your body and thus helps you to lose weight safely.
NB: Persons with allergies to shellfish should refrain from using this product. Not to be used by pregnant or lactating women.

CHROMIUM
Chromium is an essential trace mineral meaning that it is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, and it also helps to regulate the metabolism of our blood sugar and thus helps deter diabetes. NB: It is advised that anyone with diabetes contact their doctor before taking a chromium supplement.
CIDER VINEGAR
Cider Vinegar is a natural supplement that cleanses the body of toxins as well as promoting healthy blood circulation and improving digestion. It also lowers fat storage in the body and may help arthritis.

C.L.A.(CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID)
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) aids in weight loss by reducing body fat and increasing muscle mass. It facilitates the pathway of glucose to the muscle cells thereby preventing the conversion of glucose into fat. CLA helps increase the ability of fat to enter into muscle cells to be burned as fuel. As it is found in red meat and with the decrease of meat consumption, deficiencies in CLA are more likely to occur.  CLA is also known to fight cancer as it is an immune system enhancer and antioxidant.

GRAPEFRUIT PECTIN FIBRE
Grapefruit Pectin Fibre, obtained from the rind, membranes and juice sacs of the popular fruit, provides an excellent source of water soluble fibre, recognised in helping to reduce the appetite therefore helping with weight control. Soluble fibre helps lower blood cholesterol levels by binding with bile and other undesirable substances and flushing them through the body, without affecting the absorption of dietary calcium.

• Lowers blood cholesterol
• Helps reduce appetite
• Helps weight control
• Helps maintain bowel regularity
• May help to lower cholesterol levels
• Helps open up clogged arteries by reducing the plaque

LECITHIN
Lecithin has been used for a variety of health benefits. Soya lecithin (the commercial kind of lecithin) has been popular through the years as a supplement taken for the purpose of fighting cholesterol, supporting liver health, and promoting weight loss.

Many scientists have surmised that lecithin may have significant effects in improving brain and memory function and in treating brain-related disorders including Alzheimer's, dementia, and amnesia amongst others.

Lecithin is also said to prevent fats from accumulating in the liver by keeping the fats dispersed in water. Because it is rich in choline which increases the metabolism of fats, lecithin has been seen to be effective in weight loss. It helps in burning and in the breakdown of fats so that they do not get stored in the body, but are used as a source of energy. Lecithin helps prevent plaque and fat from sticking to the arterial walls. It has also been found to help lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and increase levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).
Lecithin can be a valuable supplement to support cardiovascular health, circulatory health, and proper nervous system function.

PHASE 2 STARCH NEUTRALISER
Phase 2 is an entirely natural white kidney bean food extract which acts in your body to neutralise starch from the carbohydrate foods in your daily diet. It is the first available nutritional supplement which is able to "stop starch".  It has been clinically proven in multiple studies to delay the digestion and absorption of  carbohydrates, thus, in turn, reducing the caloric impact of starchy foods.
When used in conjunction with a sensible diet and exercise, Phase 2 may assist in weight control. While there is no such thing as a magic weight control pill, Phase 2 may enable people concerned with weight control and/or blood glucose levels to enjoy carbohydrate-rich foods again in moderation.

JOINT AND MOBILITY SUPPLEMENTS

BROMELAIN EXTRACT
Bromelain an enzyme sourced from the pineapple that is able to break down proteins in the body and can help to ease and prevent a number of ailments because of its valuable medicinal properties.

Bromelain is taken by many arthritis sufferers because it can help to reduce the swelling and inflammation that can stem from this disorder. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties it can also help in the treatment of rheumatism.

Bromelain has also been found to have blood thinning properties, and this means that it is also effective in the prevention and treatment of clots in the blood and plaques in the arteries, which in turn can help to prevent cardiovascular problems. There are a number of other benefits of Bromelain, and some of the health problems that this enzyme has been used to treat include:

Aches and pains
Numbness and tingling
Colds
Asthma
Hay fever (this can be treated with a combination of quercetin and Bromelain. The benefits of these supplements taken together act as an antioxidant that works on the histamine processes in the body)
Itching skin and some skin disorders
Pains associated with varicose veins
Sluggish immune systems
Breast pain in mothers who were previously breast feeding
In addition to this, further testing of Bromelain has shown that this enzyme could be effective in the treatment of cancer.

CALCIUM & MAGNESIUM
Calcium is known to build strong bones and tooth formation. It is also helpful for blood coagulation, heart rhythm, nerve transmission and muscle growth.
Magnesium facilitates in the body's bone and tooth formation, nerve conduction, muscle contraction and enzyme activation. It is essential in calcium metabolism, the production of enzymes and proteins while  providing proper utilisation of fats and carbohydrates. Although Magnesium can increase energy levels, it contains natural tranquillising properties and may aid the symptoms of stress disorders. Magnesium improves heart rate as it dilates the blood vessels and prevents blood clotting and heart attacks and has been scientifically proven to bring relief to a variety of conditions including cramps, Asthma, chronic tiredness and fatigue, kidney stones, diabetes high blood pressure, migraine and tension headaches, premenstrual tension and osteoporosis.

CELADRIN
Celadrin is an all natural product which has after an intensive research process has been clinically proven as a pain management and anti inflammatory treatment.
Celadrin works best when taken in conjunction with Glucosamine as it helps to re-lubricate joint tissue reducing inflammation.
Celadrin is a compound that enhances the cell membranes throughout the whole body and therefore provides cell fluidity and elasticity. This extra fluid that the body gains helps to act as a cushion for the bones and joints giving them more flexibility to move around with no pain.

Celadrin's compound is made up of different fatty acid carbons, which have been arranged in a certain way to achieve maximum treatment for healthy joints.

The Celadrin compound provides constant lubrication for the joints allowing the cell membranes to stop the inflammatory chemicals. It also helps to stop the chemicals attacking the membrane which makes the joints stiffen, to gain more flexibility.
Celadrin can help a number of various conditions and diseases these are:

Osteoarthritis - This condition is common in older adults. It affects the joints by degeneration, and is often called the 'wear and tear' disease. Celadrin lubricates the cell membranes, and helps restore mobility and to relieve pain.

Arthritis - This condition is when your joints and muscles are sore, inflamed and causes the sufferer pain and restricted mobility. Celedrin helps to lubricate the joints which help mobility and pain, to help ease most of the symptoms of arthritis.

Joint problems - Common joint problems such as stiffness can also be helped by Celadrin. Its ability to heal and give joints more flexibility will help ease and even in some cases cure some joint problems.

Knee and elbow injuries - Knee and elbow injuries are the most common of joint injuries. Celadrin will help to diminish the pain of the injuries whilst helping to rejuvenate the cells to help the healing of the injury. It will also reduce any swelling that may have appeared on the joints.

Sports injuries - Sports injuries involve a range of various problems. Celedrin can help to aid the recovery of these injuries, whilst numbing the pain and taking away any inflammation.

Lower back pain - Celadrin has been shown to help relieve back pain and provide more flexibility for sufferers.

Psoriasis -  Celedrin can help this skin condition by reducing skin inflammation, easing soreness and pain.

GLUCOSAMINE SULPHATE
Glucosamine is a natural compound found in high concentrations in joint cartilage. This joint cartilage functions as a protective tissue  allowing the joints to function as they should.  However, as we get older, this cartilage gets thinner. In some cases, osteoarthritis occurs.
Glucosamine Sulphate has long been known to natural health researchers as effective in healing joints. Specifically, it delivers the raw materials needed by the body to manufacture mucopolysaccharide which is a key component of cartilage. It is beneficial to the body as it can:
Stimulate the growth of cartilage by serving as a building block for its production and as a result is particularly useful for the prevention of all forms of age-related degenerative joint diseases.
Can help ease the discomfort, stiffness and inflammation associated with arthritis.
Can increase range of motion and help to repair ageing and damaged joints in the knees, hips, spine and hands.
May speed up the healing of sprains and strengthen joints, preventing future injury.
May aid sufferers of migraine and depression.
Can rejuvenate the skin.

MARINE CHONDROITIN

Chondroitin is a more complex molecule than Glucosamine. Like Glucosamine, it is a major constituent of cartilage and has been the subject of many clinical trials.

Chondroitin helps to keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (particularly water) into the connective tissue. It may also block enzymes that break down cartilage, and it provides the building blocks for the body to produce new cartilage.
A number of scientific studies suggest that Chondroitin may be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis that commonly occurs as people age by reducing pain, improving mobility for people with hip or knee problems, reducing joint swelling and stiffness.
Other conditions for which Chondroitin has been suggested include pre-term labour and Alzheimer's disease. Studies have also shown that Chondroitin may help to repair damage caused from heart attacks, reduce symptoms of an over-active bladder or cystitis and osteoporosis.

GREEN LIPPED MUSSEL
Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a New Zealand shellfish, from which an extract has been shown to be useful in the treatment of asthma, psoriasis, bowel inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
NB: People with shellfish allergy should consult a doctor before taking green-lipped mussel.
MSM
Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring form of organic sulphur which provides temporary relief from the joint pain and inflammation associated with rheumatism, tendinitis, and bursitis. MSM also helps to alleviate muscle cramps and muscle pain.

High impact sports such as jogging, aerobics, rugby, tennis, and basketball can cause joint injury in people from their late twenties onwards. With every step taken the moving body puts pressure equal to three times the weight of the body onto the knees and hips. Cartilage takes most of that load and as the body ages the cartilage takes longer to replenish and becomes thinner allowing bones to grind together causing inflammation and pain.

Sulphur is vital to the creation and regeneration of the body’s tissues. MSM enhances the health of the body’s cartilage by providing the nutritional support of sulphur for joint maintenance and repair, naturally and effectively helps to ease pain, and helps to accelerate the healing of fractures.

The benefits of this product are as follows:
Beneficial in relieving arthritic and joint discomfort as it provides a flexible bond between proteins for your joints, tendons and cartilage.
Good for improving skin, hair and nails.
Increasing intestinal health, which can support conditions such as constipation, diarrhoea, and over acidity.
Due to its ability to regulate cell function it has also shown to be useful in the treatment of food allergies.
Alleviate muscle cramps and pain
Improve the function of the joints
Accelerate the healing of fractures
Improve the integrity of cartilage and prevent its deterioration
Stimulate growth of cells, muscles, tissue, bones and cartilage
Assist and relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

FISH OILS

COD LIVER OIL
Cod Liver Oil helps to keep joints and bones healthy providing 100% RDA of Vitamins A and Vitamin D. Cod Liver Oil has long been a traditional remedy for problems associated with joints as it is thought to lubricate them therefore reducing the friction that causes the pain and inflammation.
The large amount of Vitamin A present in Cod Liver Oil aids vision, is vital for healthy growth and resistance, and is beneficial for the skin and mucous membranes. Vitamin D regulates blood levels of calcium and phosphorous – minerals which are vital for healthy bones and teeth.
The Omega 3 fatty acids found in Cod Liver Oil are a form of polyunsaturated fats, which, unlike saturated fats, are good for you and are increasingly recognised as important to human health. Researchers have found that without a good supply of Omega 3’s, the body will use saturated fat to construct cell membranes and as a result these cell membranes are not very elastic thus making it harder for the heart to return to a resting state. The polyunsaturated fats in Cod Liver Oil are thus not only good for the heart and circulation but are also thought to improve memory and cognitive function as a result.
Omega 3 fatty acids, such as DHA and EPA, are beneficial in fighting and preventing arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and depression.

Focus, memory and concentration is enhanced through use of Cod Liver Oil, thus decreasing the symptoms of  ADD and ADHD. It also enhances immune systems, allowing the body to more easily fight common colds and the flu. Vitamin A enhances the abilities of the Omega 3 fatty acids by helping to fight off infections.
Cod Liver Oil discourages blood platelets from sticking together therefore reducing the likelihood of blood clots and thrombosis and can also reduce high blood pressure and the level of cholesterol. It also improves skin tone and assists skin irritations like eczema and acne.

Scientific evidence also supports the use of Cod Liver Oils with the following conditions:

Asthma, Bipolar Disorder, Breast Feeding Support, Cystic Fibrosis, Kidney Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis, Premenstrual syndrome, Psoriasis, Raynaud’s disease, Schizophrenia,Sickle cell anaemia, Ulcerative colitis, Alzheimer's disease (very mild cases only), Angina, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Colon cancer (reduces risk), Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), Endometriosis, Glaucoma, Migraine headaches, Osteoarthritis, Photo sensitivity, Pre-pre-eclampsia and low birth weight, Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes.

Above all, Cod Liver Oil is valued for its ability to help soothe the pain associated with Osteoarthritis morning stiffness and swelling by thickening the fluid in the joints.

EFA(ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS)

Essential fatty acids EFAs are essential for the healthy functioning of every organ, cell, and tissue in your body
Essential fatty-acids are vital for your cell's oxygenation, proper brain and nerve function (fatty acids constitute 70% of brain and nerve tissue), proper growth, healthy skin, lipid and metabolism regulation, prostaglandin and hormone formation, and rapid recovery of your fatigued muscles.
Essential fatty acids nourish your skin, hair, mucous membrane, nerves, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, and cells. They also  help to maintain your hormonal balance and help your mental/neurological performance such as memory retention, mood change and visual problems.
Essential fatty acids enhance your immune system. They are anti-inflammatory, brain and cardio protective, and necessary for any weight loss programme.
EFAs are also instrumental in digestive and intestinal health, offering soothing, healing, and lubricative properties to all aspects of these functions.
EFA's strengthen your liver and kidney functions, alleviate inflammation, function as internal lubricants, balance water and facilitate the conversion of lactic acid into water and carbon dioxide.
Deficiencies of essential fatty acids may cause:

• Skin eruptions (chronic eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis, acme, dry skin)
• Hair loss, dry hair, brittle dry & impaired nail growth
• Increased susceptibility to infections and inflammations
• Frequent headache
• Fatigue
• Heart and circulatory problems
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Liver and kidney congestion and degeneration
• Retardation of growth and healing
• Complete dysfunction of your body's endocrine system (glandular system)
• Chronic diarrhoea; Crown's disease; IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
• Attention Deficit Disorder, hyperactivity
• Irritability and/or nervousness; PMS, mood changes
• Emphysema, asthma, or other chronic lung disease
• Chronic joint pain or arthritis
• History of infertility or impotence
• Chronic depression
• Low metabolic rate; weight gain

EPA / DHA

EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids are Omega 3 fats, which are found in cold water fish. These polyunsaturated fats play a very important role with the function of our bodies.
EPA and DHA are vital nutrients and may be taken to maintain healthy function of the following:
Brain and Retina -  DHA is a building block of tissue in the brain and retina of the eye. It helps with forming neural transmitters, such as phosphatidylserine, which is important for brain function. DHA is found in the retina of the eye and taking DHA may be necessary for maintaining healthy levels of DHA for normal eye function.
EPA and DHA are beneficial to the cardiovascular system as they are converted into hormone like substances whereby they regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.
Human growth and intellectual development - DHA plays a very important role during foetal development, early infancy, and old age. High concentrations of DHA are found in the brain and increases 300-500% in an infant's brain during the last trimester of pregnancy. Adding DHA to a pregnant mothers diet may be beneficial for the foetus's brain development. Elderly people should also take EPA DHA, because as we get older, our bodies form less DHA and EPA, which may cause less mental focus and cognitive function. Taking EPA DHA may also help with mental abnormalities, such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia.
There are other benefits to taking EPA and DHA because it also plays as a source of energy, it insulates the body against heat loss, prevents skin from drying and flaking, and cushions tissues and organs.

G.L.A.EVENING PRIMROSE OIL
Evening Primrose Oil has been called the most sensational preventive discovery since vitamin C. It contains the pain relieving compound phenylalanine and is increasingly being used to treat chronic headaches.

Evening Primrose Oil contains a high concentration of a fatty acid called GLA and it is this fatty acid that is largely responsible for the remarkable healing properties of the plant.

The gamma-linoleic acid, linoleic acid and other nutrients in this oil are essential for cell structure and improve the elasticity of the skin. These fatty acids also help to regulate hormones and improve nerve function aiding problems ranging from PMS to migraine headaches. The hormone balancing effect contributes to healthy breast tissue.

Specifically, evening primrose oil may help to:

Relieve the discomforts of PMS, menstruation, endometriosis and fibrocystic breasts. It helps to lessen menstrual cramps, minimises premenstrual breast tenderness, aids irritable bowel flare-ups, and carbohydrate cravings, and helps to control endometriosis-associated inflammation.

Ease the joint pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis: Supplementation with evening primrose oil and other sources of GLA has been shown to lessen the joint pain and swelling of this crippling disease.

Prevent diabetes-associated nerve damage: Research indicates that the GLA in evening primrose oil can help prevent, and in some cases even reverse, the nerve damage (neuropathy) so commonly seen with diabetes.

Reduce the symptoms of eczema: In some cases, eczema develops when the body has problems converting dietary fats into GLA. Getting supplemental GLA from evening primrose oil may therefore be helpful.

Help treat acne and rosacea: By working to dilute sebum, a thick oily substance that is over secreted in some people with acne, the essential fatty acids in evening primrose oil may reduce the risk of pores becoming clogged and lesions developing.

Combat damage from multiple sclerosis: The abundant supply of essential fatty acids in evening primrose oil may be valuable in minimizing the inflammation associated with this progressive nerve disorder. The fatty acids may also contribute to healthy nerve development when taken over time.

Treat Alzheimer's-related memory deficiencies: By boosting the transmission of nerve impulses, evening primrose oil may be valuable in treating this progressive brain disorder.

Counter impotence and female infertility: By promoting blood flow, the GLA in evening primrose oil can help treat a primary cause of male impotence; compromised circulation leading to impaired penile blood flow. The oil is often taken with vitamin C and ginkgo Biloba for this purpose. In addition, when the oil is taken long term, GLA can help prevent blood vessel narrowing, often a consequence of plaque build-up from high cholesterol. By improving uterine function, GLA may also help those who are unable to conceive.

Nourish nails, scalp, and hair: The rich stores of essential fatty acids in evening primrose oil not only prevent nails from cracking but also help to keep them generally healthy. In addition, the essential fatty acids nourish the scalp, making the supplement potentially valuable in treating a variety of hair problems.

Prevent alcohol withdrawal symptoms: GLA prompts the brain to produce a specific type of prostaglandin called prostaglandin E, which works to prevent withdrawal symptoms such as depression and seizures by indirectly protecting the liver and nervous system.

Hyperactivity in Children.

NB:
Consult a doctor first if you suffer from epilepsy, are taking anticoagulants, blood pressure medicine, blood cholesterol medicine or oestrogen or other hormonal therapies.

Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use this herb.

STARFLOWER OIL
(BORAGE OIL)

Starflower (Borage) oil has been used therapeutically for hundreds of years and is derived from the seeds of the Borage plant - a large plant with blue, star-shaped flowers found throughout Europe, North Africa and North America.
Offering one of the richest sources of GLA, it possesses a strength which is almost twice as much as evening primrose oil and has lead to it becoming an increasingly popular daily supplement, particularly amongst women, with some finding that it may help to support the maintenance of hormonal balance and healthy skin.

People with low thyroid function, poor dietary habits, high alcohol consumption and people whose bodies are generally under stress may struggle to get enough GLA as their bodies may be too busy coping with these pressures to produce the necessary amount for optimum health.

It is particularly helpful for sufferers of PMS symptoms (such as cramps and breast tenderness) and may also help to improve skin conditions such as eczema, acne and psoriasis.

Starflower Oil has anti-inflammatory properties so it can be beneficial for those suffering from joint pain. It may also benefit sufferers of unhealthy looking skin or hair, reproductive disorders (male and female) and poor immunity.

GARLIC

Garlic is one of the earth's greatest health tonics and does indeed have scientifically-proven medicinal properties.  It is a natural antibiotic and is useful in treating everything from allergies to tonsillitis. Garlic contains many sulphur compounds which detoxify the body, boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Garlic has also demonstrated anti-cancer, antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant effects.
Garlic is used to help prevent atherosclerosis (plaque build up in the arteries causing blockage and possibly leading to heart attack or stroke), reduce colds, coughs and bronchitis.
Garlic also has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help scavenge free radicals; particles that can damage cell membranes, interact with genetic material and possibly contribute to the ageing process as well as the development of a number of conditions including heart disease and cancer, especially of the digestive system as it prevents certain tumours from growing larger and in some cases may reduce the size of certain tumours.
Studies suggest that fresh garlic prevents blood clots by destroying the build-up of plaque in the arteries enabling healthy blood flow thus helping to prevent the possibility of heart attack, stroke, thrombosis or peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Sufferers of PVD experience an increase in mobility as they experience pain in the legs when they walk and move. A number of studies have also found that garlic reduces elevated total cholesterol levels and lowers blood pressure more effectively than placebo. It has also been used as a traditional dietary supplement for diabetes in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Garlic removes heavy metals such as lead and mercury from the body and has been helpful in treating yeast infections, and offering relief from rheumatism.
Garlic has also been seen to help the recovery of wounds, ulcers, skin infections, flu, athlete's foot, some viruses, respiratory ailments, kidney problems, bladder problems and worms.
NB: Garlic can irritate the digestive tracts of very young children and some sources don't recommend garlic for breastfeeding mothers.

FLAXSEED OIL
A rich source of healing oil, flaxseed has been cultivated for more than 7000 years. Rich in essential fatty acids, or EFAs, flaxseed oil is used to prevent and treat heart disease and to relieve a variety of inflammatory disorders and hormone-related problems, including infertility.
Specifically, flaxseed oil may help to
lower cholesterol
protect against angina
protect against heart disease
control high blood pressure
counter inflammation associated with gout, lupus and fibrocystic breasts
counter inflammation in the joints, skin and kidneys
control constipation, haemorrhoids, diverticular disorders and gallstones
aid inflammatory bowel disease as flaxseed oil can help to calm inflammation and repair any intestinal tract damage
treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and rosacea
promote healthy hair and nails
minimise nerve damage that causes numbness and tingling
treat Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disorder of the nervous system, and protect against the nerve damage associated with diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
protect against breast, colon, prostate, and skin cancer
treat menopausal symptoms, menstrual cramps, female infertility and endometriosis
fight prostate problems, male infertility and impotence

NB: Do not take if pregnant or breast-feeding.
Due to lack of information it is advisable to avoid giving flaxseed oil to children under the age of 12.
Women with hormone-dependent conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or cancers of the breast, ovaries, or uterus and men with prostate cancer should avoid taking flaxseed products without prior consultation with a doctor.
Flaxseed can block the Oesophagus or parts of the intestinal tract. Therefore individuals who have had Oesophageal or intestinal blockages should not use flaxseed.
If you take flaxseed, do not take other drugs within 2 hours.

OMEGA 3
The benefits of Omega 3 are broad, benefiting not just healthy adults, but pregnant women, children and those suffering with all kinds of illnesses.

Omega 3 rich oily fish is called “brain food”, because Omega 3 is a building block essential for developing cell membranes, signal pathways and other neurological systems.

It’s a primary component of your retina, and helps maintain good eyesight

This combination of fatty acids is great for helping to maintain healthy skin, heart and joints as well as balancing hormones and assisting brain function.  It's protective qualities protect against Alzheimer's Disease, as well as helping to reduce heart and cardiovascular disease through the lowering of Cholesterol. It is also believed to support the lowering of blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and lessen inflammation.

If you are on a low fat diet it is even more important to benefit from Omega 3. Being a “good fat”, Omega 3 will be instrumental in ensuring a high enough absorption level of fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, needed for resistance against infection, healthy skin, eyes, heart, circulation, blood clotting and strong bones.

A lack of Omega 3 and other Essential Fatty Acids may result in dry, scaly skin, acne, flaking nails, allergies, hormone imbalance, lethargy, headaches, migraine, and lowered immunity.

Whether planning a baby, pregnant or breast feeding, some research has shown that with the mother having the recommended amounts of Omega 3, babies develop faster than those whose mothers who do not.
In children increasing the intake of Omega 3 can benefit those with dyslexia, ADHD and dyspraxia. Omega 3 is also thought to have a significant effect on reading skills too.

The anti-inflammatory properties in Omega 3 benefit those with arthritis, asthma, eczema and psoriasis. Periods of remission can also be created for those suffering with inflammatory bowls conditions such as IBS, colitis and ulcerative colitis. It can also support the dietary management of those with heart disease and cardiovascular disease and assists in the relief of allergies.

Beneficial for people suffering from depression, bipolar disorders and ME.

OMEGA 3, 6 & 9
This combination of fatty acids is great for helping to maintain a healthy heart and assisting brain function.
Omega 6 has anti-inflammatory properties that can help the bloating and pain associated with PMS.  It also maintains healthy skin, hair and nails and generally helps to bring about hormonal and emotional balance.
Omega 9 also has many preventative qualities as its main component,  Oleic acid, helps to reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the blood vessels), cardiovascular disease and stroke.
With the many benefits that Omega 3 has to offer (please see Omega 3), all three compounds when combined interact with each other so the balance between them is crucial for good health.

 ALA
ALA (Alpha-Linoleic Acid) - found primarily in dark green leafy vegetables, flax seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and a variety of vegetable oils.

Your body is able to convert ALA into EPA and DHA and can therefore help to keep your  heart and blood vessels healthy. In doing so, they can reverse and prevent high blood pressure, as well as reduce your risk of suffering a stroke.

ALA can also help to decrease pain and inflammation throughout your body,  prevent breast and colon cancer and can help to reverse and prevent depression and other mental/emotional health challenges.

DIGESTIVE

PROBIOTICS & FOS
Increasingly hectic lifestyles, fast food and poor diets can all contribute to the growth of unwanted bacteria in our digestive system. Probiotics may offer a natural way to help support the maintenance of normal bacterial balance in the digestive tract, helping to replenish the body with ‘Good Bacteria!’
Stress, poor diets and modern food production techniques can decrease the numbers of these positive bacteria. The result of the lack of these bacteria can be very damaging, causing diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and other awful gastrointestinal problems.

Taking a daily probiotic supplement may help to support the maintenance of the digestive system, and may be a convenient way of supporting the body's natural bacterial balance, particularly for those who are not keen on the expensive probiotic drinks on the market.
It has been said that the body contains more bacteria in the gut than number of cells in the entire body. It is somewhat common for the delicate balance of the micro-flora within the digestive system to be disrupted and therefore it is important to ensure that normal balance is maintained.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are natural sugars that are used as food by the beneficial bacteria in the body.

As the body cannot digest FOS, the FOS travels to the gastrointestinal tract to feed such beneficial bacteria as acidophilus. These bacteria then aid in digestion, help ward off infection, and help maintain a balanced gastrointestinal tract. FOS is essential for optimum digestive and colon health.

PSYLLIUM HUSK
Psyllium is quickly becoming one of the top recommendations for people using low carbohydrate Atkins-style diets. It is very difficult to get enough fibre in a diet when you eliminate the carbohydrates in cereals, whole grains and fruits. Psyllium capsules are an easy way to take care of this problem. It fills you with fibre, reducing appetite without overstimulating the nervous system.
Psyllium is the husk of the seed of the Plantain and is a top herb used in weight control and for general intestinal health. Psyllium has also been used for irritable bowel syndrome (a stress-related disorder with alternating bouts of diarrhoea and constipation). Because it will produce easy bowel movements with a loose stool, Psyllium is used by patients with anal fissures (cracks in the skin near the anus) and haemorrhoids and is often recommended following anal or rectal surgery, during pregnancy and as a secondary treatment in certain types of diarrhoea. Psyllium also has the additional advantages over other sources of fibre of reducing flatulence and bloating.
Studies and clinical reports suggest that Psyllium may enhance the sensation of fullness and reduce hunger cravings. For these reasons, incorporating Psyllium and other sources of fibre into the diet may aid weight loss.
For those simply wishing to improve digestion and intestinal tract health, a single tablet per day, taken with plenty of water, is all that is needed.
NB: Do not use Psyllium if you have a bowel obstruction or a disease that causes narrowing of any part of the digestive tract.

Diabetics should avoid Psyllium if they are having problems keeping blood sugar levels under control.
